What is the underlying structure of the eyelids?.
The eyelids consist of multiple tissue layers. There are 4 layers that is related to the scope of this articles. They are skin, orbicularis oculi muscle, orbital septum and orbital fat, which appeared sequentially going from the most frontal layers moving backward.
As a person experience the aging process, and accumulating damaged from exposing environmental factors such as damage from the sun. Their lower eyelid's skin support network made from elastin and collagen will gradually break down, making it loosing the elasticity and become loose. After that, the aging process also weaken the orbital septum, reduce its ability to held off the orbital fat pads, allowing these fat pads to come forward and creating this baggy appearance. How is lower eyelid surgery performed? How long does it take?.
This procedures is a surgery that address directly the mentioned problems in the previous sections. The surgery take around 30 minutes to complete. Prior to the procedures, the areas will be cleansed and applied anesthesia.
The incision of lower eyelid surgery.
The incision in lower eyelid surgery is made along the lower eyelid crease, close to the lash line, which help to hide the post operative scars. A scalpel is used to cut along the marked line, exposing the underlying muscle layer.
Exposing the fat pocket of the lower eyelid.
To access the orbital fat pocket, the surgeon will make incisions through the muscle layer and orbital septum, exposes the orbital fat deposits of the lower eyelid.
Removing excess fat bag in the lower eyelid.
After exposing the fat bag below the orbital septum, the surgeon will use a Kelly forceps to clamp and remove any excess fat that is causing the of baggy and puffy appearances in the lower eyelid.
Removing excess skin in the lower eyelid.
After removing the excess fat and skin, the surgeon will close the incision with non-absorbable sutures.
Post-operative care.
- Your eye will swell and bruise for the first two days and the conditions will gradually subside.
- The suture will be removed after 5 days.
- Avoid strenuous work for the first 2 days.
- After two weeks, the swelling will be completely gone and the aesthetic improvement will be noticeable.
